How about rescuing?? Go to http://www.mickaboo.com They are in your area. They rescue birds in the Bay Area and need homes for their birds. You will have to attend one of their classes first, but they are great.

I have parakeets. you are not going to find a handfed bird at a petshop, period! Petsmart doesn'tdo that thing, they are into quantity, not quality, and I haven't found smaller shopes to be much different. you want a handfed parakeet, and I can certainly understand why. they are easier to handle, and tolerate humans a bit more than the normal parakeet from a Petsmart pusher. now is the time to be scouring the papers for individual breeders. ask them questions, and getexactly what you are looking for.
