You won't know, but there are signs that may be clues that the person has alzheimers. There are also signs that you may mistake for senility. As others have posted, only a doctor can properly diagnose a person with the disease. If you believe that someone you know is showing signs of alzheimers, then you need to schedule an appoinment with them as soon as possible. The sooner it is detected, the better the treatment is for it. My grandfather has it, and my family was in denial about it for way too long.
So here is a clip for the symptoms of alzheimers.
Taken from The National Institute on Aging website: Article- Alzheimer's Disease Fact Sheet.
"AD begins slowly. At first, the only symptom may be mild forgetfulness, which can be confused with age-related memory change. Most people with mild forgetfulness do not have AD. In the early stage of AD, people may have trouble remembering recent events, activities, or the names of familiar people or things. They may not be able to solve simple math problems. Such difficulties may be a bother, but usually they are not serious enough to cause alarm.
However, as the disease goes on, symptoms are more easily noticed and become serious enough to cause people with AD or their family members to seek medical help. Forgetfulness begins to interfere with daily activities. People in the middle stages of AD may forget how to do simple tasks like brushing their teeth or combing their hair. They can no longer think clearly. They can fail to recognize familiar people and places. They begin to have problems speaking, understanding, reading, or writing. Later on, people with AD may become anxious or aggressive, or wander away from home. Eventually, patients need total care"

A person suspected of having Alzheimer's is given a series of cognitive tests by a doctor to see if indeed there are mental problems. If there are, then the person is given blood tests to make sure it's not some kind of deficiency or other disease, and then some type of brain-scan is given to see if there is brain atrophy or other problems.
The only definite diagnosis of AD comes after death during autopsy. Basically the doctors rule out everything else with those symptoms and call it Alzheimer's.
BTW, it does NOT have to be a psychologist or psychiatrist who does the diagnosis or administers the cognitive testing. A primary care doctor or one specializing in elder care is qualified.

Confusion and forgetting things are obviously the two main things, but simple questions, set by a doctor will find out more, before referring the patient to a consultant. Questions like, what year is it? Who is the president or prime minister? How old are you? What's your address? What's the names and ages of your family? People with Alzheimer's eventually revert back to a much younger age, and will give answers that were true many years ago.

Idiotfinen is dumb. Yes, only a psychologist or psychiatrist can diagnose alzheimer's disease. You dont' have to go to a hospital, though. It is not an emergency.
