I am moving across the country and seriously considering these areas. From what I can gather, they are in NW DC, which is supposedly the safer area. But I've been getting mixed reviews about the neighborhood's safety and whatnot. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Yes you are right..NW DC is the safest area, but those areas aren't too great. Columbia Heights is undergoing a massive renovation and is getting better everyday. I used to live there, and I felt safe, but it wasn't that great. There is a nice new grocery store, and a Target/Best Buy will be in place sometime in the next couple years. Close to Adams Morgan and U street areas which are nice restarant/night life places. So columbia heights is a decent place, just be street smart. As far as Petworth...I would stay away. Its a little rougher, and not as much to do. The places seem dirtier. I looked at a place breifly there when I first moved to town, and it was very cheap and you get what you pay for. I'd personally stay away. you may want to consider Adams Morgan area or Friendship Heights area. Those are a little more west of the areas you are looking at and are a little more stable. I currently live in SW and I think its the hidden jewel of DC. Places to park, cheaper rents, safe, close to highways, close to subway system., and a new baseball stadium in another year.

Generally, NW DC is the safest and "best" part of the city. As the person aboce me mentioned, Columbia Heights is becoming a better area and they've built a lot of new stuff there. Petworth also isn't as bad as it used to be but isn't a great area. Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan, Cleveland Park, Friendship Heights are all nice areas. (Basically any of the Metro stops on the Red Line from Dupont Circle to Friendship Heights are good areas).

Also if you would consider living right outside DC then I would also recommend Takoma Park, Bethesda or Silver Spring in Maryland. All of these areas have "downtowns" and are adjacent to DC, and have lots of good stuff to do and are also on the Red Line with a very short commute into downtown DC.
