i am not sure what to do with this cute little bird. I have been letting him rest it. He does come out of his house to eat and drink but is very placid. I had one of my other birds attack him so I moved him into a cage all by himself and he is doing much better. What would a vet do even if his leg was broken? We are concerned and would appreciate any help you can offer.

Take your bird into a vet who sees birds on a regular basis (not just a dog & cat vet). If the leg is broken, he might be able to set it if the break isn't too old and isn't too far healed. Otherwise, he may just leave it, if it is broken and has already started to heal (bone growing).

Either way, it would definitely be worth a trip because an injury like this will put stress on the bird and when a bird is under stress it has a good chance of getting sick. (Just like if you get stressed out, aren't sleeping well, etc. and then immune system suffers and you are more susceptible to infections) -- Better to have him checked by a vet. Even if the foot was only injured and not broken, if the skin was broken you wouldn't want it getting infected.

If you take him in and for some odd reason the vet wants to put him down because his leg is broken --- say NO and leave!! I have friends whose budgie got her leg broken by one of their other birds (landed on his cage and he bit her) -- the vet set her leg. It healed fine. She isn't perfect, but she perches and moves around just fine.

I know of birds without feet and birds without toes who move around and perch fine. They learn to adapt. I have an African Grey who is crippled on one foot and he balances on the perch -- and loves his swing!! He gets around just fine. I have to watch him if both he and my cockatiels are loose on the floor. Sometimes he gets mad and will chase them -- I have to intervene, even though he just limps along and isn't as fast!!

My point is...even if her leg is broken, it will heal and she will learn to move around on it. The vet can make sure she isn't otherwise sick because of the stress and set the leg if need be.

You can also make her more comfortable (whether her leg is set or not) by putting a soft cloth in the cage for her to stand on instead of the wire. Make sure it is not something she can eat -- short fleece or a well worn washcloth, dishcloths work well, too. You will have to wash it daily, so you should have a couple to change out.

Good luck.

Get to an avian vet ASAP. It may just be a sore toe, and a vet may prescribe a medication to avoid infection and ease the pain on the foot, maybe numb it. A toe may or may not need to be amputated, or the entire foot may need to be amputated. However, I know someone who has a small parrot whose foot was severely injured by a rat bite, and has had to have his foot removed. He's happy and quite adaptable, but all you'll have to do is make some changes to his perches so it'll be more comfortable to move from place to place. If it's an actual broken bone, they may bandage it to hold it in place while it heals and I'm sure he'd recover fine from that.

If you wait too long, the bird could suffer more and the vet may not be able to do as much, so I'd see a vet ASAP.

Small birds like lovebirds and parakeets can survive with a broken wing, but broken leg complicates things, since they're hoppers. Call the vet and ask for advice - if you take it in now, he might put it down. Let your injured one have plenty of rest in a quiet part of the house while it tries to heal. As long as his beak, both wings and other leg are fine, he should be ok.
If it's only injured, it should heal fine. If it's broken, watch to make sure it doesn't get infected.

The pet e.r. hospital should give you free advice. Most vets offices will give you free advice also. Most vet offices do not tell you to bring your pet in unless there is no home remedy. That poor baby. A cat or dog that is not well you can cuddle but a poor bird, what can you do. Just talk to him and let him talk to you. Please call a couple of professionals to help the baby. Give him kisses for me.

Cold showers: They not only burn 500 extra calories a day, studies from The New England Journal of Medicine cite that this icy water also activates ‘brown fat’ – the favorable type of body fat which creates body heat, increases metabolic process and burns off naughty light fat.

Use spray oil instead of pouring. One squirt contains one calorie compared to 120 calories from a tablespoon. If you use oil inside your cooking daily, this small change could lose you a stone over the year.

People who plan their weekly meals tend to be successful at losing weight than those that don’t. Plan your dishes to feature healthy carbs such as nice potato and wholegrain pasta, vegetables and lean proteins, buy every one of the ingredients in advance and don’t be tempted to enjoy out or order in.

Sunlit side up please. Two eggs for breakfast is better than a bagel in relation to managing your weight, says a written report from the International Journal of Obesity.
