this seems to explain it nicely:
The Christian church has essentially taken the 10% figure from the Old Testament tithe and applied it as a “recommended minimum” for Christians in their giving. Although the New Testament does not identify a specific amount or percentage to give, it does talk about the importance and benefits of giving. They should give as they are able, “in keeping with his income.” Sometimes that means giving more than a tithe, sometime that may mean giving less than a tithe. It all depends on the ability of the Christian and the needs of the church. Each and every Christian should diligently pray and seek God’s wisdom as to whether to participate in tithing and/or for how much he or she should give (James 1:5). “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

I find when I tithe, blessings come my way. Plus, with the money I give to our church, they use to buy food and clothes to give away twice a month to people who need it.

Yes, it does say 10% in the Bible.

"A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord" (Lev. 27:30).4 The tithes and firstfruits belonged to God, and he gave them to the Levites (Num. 18:12-13, 21, 24). They could keep 90 percent of what they were given, but had to give 10 percent as an offering (verses 26-32).

Tithing was done in the days of Hezekiah (2 Chr. 31:5-6), Nehemiah (Neh. 10:35-39; 12:44) and Jesus (Matt. 23:23; Luke 11:42). In Malachi's day, tithing was required (Mal. 3:8-10), and physical blessings were promised for obedience, just as physical blessings were promised for obedience to the old covenant.

Having said that, the Bible also says

Mark 12
41Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins,[j]worth only a fraction of a penny.[k]
43Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on."

The point? If you give not from your heart but for show, it is in vain. One who gives what they can out of Love, gives more and from their heart.

My mom told me this also. She baptized me Christian and that was probably the precipitating factor for me to become an atheist. Religion should be based on faith, not how much money you can donate.

edit: I live in LA and my income is about 80k a year the 2nd most expensive city in America... If I was to tithe my salary that would be 8k a year...It would be approximatly 700 bucks a month. Thats a car payment... I need that money to live, more than a god does!

Of course there is truth to it... it is not for the church's financial growth either... unlike some people believe I guess... but it is used as the Lord would have it be used... to build His churches and Temples! It is His church after all and He is the head of His church! If you really want to know about the tithing and gain your own knowledge or testimony of it, then you have to pray about it and try it for yourself! You will find out that the promises of the Lord will be fulfilled for you... your blessings will be amazing! Just gain your own feelings as soon as you can! Good luck to you and may God Bless you !

The truth is a "tithe" was and is by some, considered to be a 10th of your income. No law says you must. that is what most teach.

Tithing is an old testament practice, which has no direct new testament counterpart.

Christians are expected to contribute time, talent, and treasure, to the maintenance and upkeep of their church community, according to their means.

There is no 10% requirement.

No. God can only be found in his creation. The Church is not a creation of God. God cannot be found in buildings of stone and wood. God is within each of us, and all around us. Use that 10% to help God's genuine creations, your fellow man and nature. Giving your hard earned cash so the church can build a megaplex, complete with Bose sound system, is the worst possible way I can think of to honor a God of Nature.

I was raised Southern Baptist.they never mentioned a certain percentage and I have visited many Church's.people want to go to a church and not some cave.or field. so they put money in the plate or send it in the mail.some churchs may do that though.

Yes. There is biblical basis. But you can give directly to the needy and not to the organizational church. Remember, the church is the people. And the Lord said : Whatsoever you do to the least of My brother; you do unto Me.
