The 'chosen bundle' is our life, which is the amalgamation of all the choices, decisions, perceptions, and desires that lead us to the life that we have now.
This quote is about the choices and decisions that we make in life in trying to find the balance that we are trying to achieve in our lives. Life's contradictions such as good and evil, life and death, everything and nothing, are all things that we are trying achieve and avoid, accept and neglect at the same time.
Life can only exist with death, and death can only exist if it has life to take away. Life is good and bad at the same time, or however one perceives it. Life can be everything and nothing at the same time. These are only a few examples of the dichotomies of life; there are plenty more.
The path of life is created and veined through the choices that we make that lead us to our experiences. Our life's experiences lead us to good and bad - trying to achieve the good and avoiding the bad - is the struggle that we are trying to find balance out of.
Trying to get somewhere and not fall, is indicating our journey in life, our experiences and ensuring that we do not make mistakes (the fall).
In combining all these concepts, you can gather the meaning of the quote.
The life that we live, the experiences that we go through, and the choices that we make along the way lead to acceptance and avoidance, desires and neglect of life's contradictions (the good and bad, life and death, everything annd nothing). Our life is a journey to achieve everything only to succomb to nothing.

Okay, well let's break it down.
We clamor about on life's contradictions....
We talk and talk regarding the subject of life's ironies.
trying to get somewhere and not fall.
Attempting to be successful without causing ourselves any harm.
dragging our chosen bundle...
carrying the baggage that we ourselves have picked up in the first place.
To me this quote speaks of how we've become a society of complainers, a bunch of people that want no risks, guarenteed sucess and for everyone to feel sorry for us because we are carrying around whatever burden we've amassed over our lives.
Not seeing the quote in context of the rest of the story and not having read the Catcher in the Rye for some 18 odd years I'd have to say that's my best stab, still not a page but maybe a launching point...
Good Luck!

We stress about things. Do it, Don't do it. Good, Bad.
We have to think about the pros and cons of things in order to do the RIGHT thing. Many times we have a hard time distinguishing what we should do. While we are trying to make these decisions we are carrying the burden of the decision itself.
I think this is the simple way to explain this quote.

I think it he means that we are all ways focusing about life and death, the things that drive us and the things that bring us down while not letting the actual facts of our life become so heavy that the sheer weight crushes us. That's my interpretation anyway.Hope this helps.

never read the book but sound like the person is just trying to get though life with all problems and challanges physical but mostly emotional and phycological. but the clamoring part leads you to think it is not just getting though life but to push pull and climb to find your place in life.
