When they are just starting to walk you should buy soft souled shoes to wear when outside or in public, at home they should go barefoot. Their bones in their feet are still developing and you don't want them to be forced into a tight or stiff shoe. Also the soft sole allows them to use the muscles in their feet to help them balance.

It has been a while since I've been to a Stride Rite store, but I know the way it always had been was that they made a "pre walker" for babies who were not yet walking. The pre-walker had a softer soul and not much support. Then there were the hard-soled, higher-topped, baby shoes for new walkers.
The thinking behind that type of shoe is that a newly walking baby can use the extra support.
There are people, however, who believe that babies are better off walking in bare feet and shoes that are as close to bare feet as possible (soft).
(My kids all wore the Stride Rites.)

In the event that they are extraordinarily made for your youngster's age then yes they are OK for him.
Toward the day's end, no shoe you put on your youngster will "demolish" him....ALL children figure out how to stroll at their own pace......do you know any individual who has never figured out how to stroll from a couple of shoes they wore at 12 months old?
You're making an awesome showing as a mum attempting to get the right shoes, yet do whatever it takes not to stress excessively, on the off chance that they are made for 'PRE walkers' then your kid can wear them. :)

If they are specially made for your child's age then yes they are OK for him.
At the end of the day, no shoe you put on your child will 'ruin' him....ALL kids learn to walk at their own pace......do you know anyone who has never learned to walk from a pair of shoes they wore at 12 months old?
Your doing a great job as a mum trying to get the right shoes, but try not to worry too much, if they are made for 'PRE walkers' then your child can wear them. :)

I only put shoes on mine when they went outside. Bare feet is the best for them.
the kind of shoe is not as important as making sure they fit properly. I had leather walkers for my first (extremely wide foot) and tennis shoes for my second.
Worry about the fit.....not the type.
