I know it will put me at an increased risk for infectious diseases like pneumonia but I would like to know since I now have a low immune system will I be at an increased risk for autoimmune diseases or cancer. Does a low immune system cause either of these?

My husband was in a severe auto accident in 1996--- His spleen was ruptured and had to be removed--- as well as having many other injuries, the worst being to his brain.
I was told he would be very prone to infection. I think he has had maybe 6 (at most!) head colds in the past 11 years!! I get sick much more often that he does!
I do make him very healthy vegetarian foods--- no junk-- and he takes vitamins every day.
But clearly, you will not necessarily be more prone to sickness. Just be diligent in following healthy eating habits, get some exercise, etc.

You are right about the low immune system but before I was allowed to leave the hospital the contagious disease dept of the hosp gave me this shot that last for 5 years. This shot fights off diseases. You can get cancer anywhere and not having a spleen won't matter. Check with your Dr. and hospital. I ad cancer with the spleen so I don't know.
A low immune system would give you a better chance of getting a S.T.D. but I am not sure of cancer. Again check with your DR> and ask about that shot.

Yes very much My best friend has no spleen at the age of 16 and she has almost died on a nomber of times almost lost a baby and did loose a baby. and she is always sick and is appling for ssi right now and disability because she cannot hold a job because she gets so sick. they always find reasons to get rid of her i know Im and her is 28-29 and Ive seen so much so please be careful be very very careful!... good luck to you
