The Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki is clearly frustrated. He is very much aware of the growing hostility between the U.S. and Iran, and he doesn't want his country to have any part in it. What he was saying in his speech was simply that if Iran and the U.S. would fight each other, do it somewhere else. He doesn't want Iraq to be the battleground of any U.S.-Iranian conflict. He said clearly that he does not favor U.S. military strike against Iran to be launched from Iraq, or for Iran to launch a strike to U.S. forces within Iraq.

While Maliki is supported by the U.S. in the fight against Iraqi insurgency, he had also a good standing relation with the Iranian president, which can be traced all the way back during Saddam's reign. Maliki and Al Sadr were both fighting against the regime of Saddam Hussein, and Iran was responsible in supplying them with arms and training.

Now, Maliki is in a predicament of having to thread on the razor's edge. While he support the U.S. and it's goals in Iraq, he can't simply throw away Iran's past goodwill and influence. After all, his country will have to exist peacefully side by side with Iran in the long term.

I think it is futile to continue the war in Iraq and that the continuation of it, now that Iranians are getting involved on the Eastern border, will lead to an outright civil war between Iraq and Iran. There was one in the eighties that lasted nine years. Remember the Iran-Contra affair? Also, the Reagan administration helped to put Saddam Hussein into power. The Shiah majority was suppressed in Iraq and the Sunni minority was favoured. There is a Sunni Arab minority in Iran and a Shiah Persian majority.

I am not sure that he is not supporting us. Remember that Iraq and Iran have fought battles between the 2 of them for hundreds if not thousands of years. Every time there has been no clear cut winner! If we think we are having problems in Iraq, that would multiply it exponentially!!

Well he is trying to keep things peaceful because if there is a war, where do you think we would try to attack from? Iraq of course. They are trying to stay away from it, or else he would be stuck in the middle and cause more destruction to his country.

It seems he enjoys all of the insurgents killing his people and us.
His main job should be closing his boarders to keep the insurgents out.
Oh, I get it - if we fight with Iran then he will be forced into being a true leader (of Iraq) and I don't think he knows how to do that.......... it took me a while to get that joke.............
