あさ = asa = morning.
あ = A
さ = Sa

Combine them together and you get "asa". I don't see where the confusion could possibly be...

Yes, kana's go by pronounciation.Asa is morning and you wrote a and sa. Kana's are syllables like ka, ki, ko or sa, se,so except a,e,i,u,o and n equivalents which are single letters/sounds. There are two parallel syllable systems: hiragana -used nowadays mostly for Japanese words and katakana used mostly for foreign words etc. they have the same syllables, 46 of them both., but they are drawn differently.
There is a lot on the internet about the Japanese language like japantimes.com has some and a lot more in links etc.

. In addition to 2 parallel syllable writings, the Japanese use Chinese characters, about 2000 of them -but read them the Japanese way and they also use our letters, the Romaji, as they call them.
Japanese is not a difficult language -except the writing, some other langauges are the other way around, very complicated except the writing -so take your choice!
Doozo!
