The main disadvantage is that you don't burn calories and fat as quickly as you might like. That said, you still gain the general health benefits of regular exercise, without the intensity associated with jogging, running, or intense biking.
Walking is also lower-impact for people who are just starting out with an exercise regimen. It's a nice way to ease yourself into a more active lifestyle.
If you want to up the intensity, try increasing your pace (ever see a speedwalker -- they are operating at or just below a slow jog.) You can also choose uneven terrain with hills to boost your workout.
If your goal is fat loss without having to spend hours walking, then try interval training. Basically, you walk at fast pace for two minutes, and then take your pace up to a fast run or sprint for one minute. Then return to the slower pace for two minutes, and sprint again for one. Keep doing this for 20-30 minutes total. This allows you to burn more calories in a shorter time. There is also evidence that interval training results in your body burning more fat for longer AFTER you workout -- in some studies up to 24 hours.
