A chihuahua can have anywhere from 1-8 pups. I had a chi that had 8 but we lost 2. One of my chis has had 7 pups twice and they all lived and did well. So it is hard to say how many the dog in question will have. The average is about 3-4. The weight gain would depend largely on how many pups she is carrying. I also know a lady whose chihuahua had 10 pups, but they were born early and all died.

Anywhere up to 6 is in the normal range, but sometime they may have just one. The average though is 3-4. Larger the litter, and less the chance of all surviving.
Please tell whoever has the chihuahua that they are prone to need C-section when they go into labor, for their pelvic bone is so tiny that they have difficulty delivering on their own, so the owner needs to be prepare to such of an eventuality, or he/she might risk losing both the mama and the litter if help is not seek immediately.

multiple births are generally a must in small breeds to avoid a single pup from growing to large in the womb that it cannot be delivered without C-section. Average litter for Chi's is 4 to 6. Many recommend x-ray at approx 30 days from conception in order to determine the number of pups so that you can be prepared.
I am former breeder of Min Pins and same situation with this breed.
