Is there a program that will record something only when sound is made?

I am looking for a program that will only record noise thru a microphone when a sound is made. I am trying to record some people talking in their sleep. This is for a college study. Freeware would be preferred but any help would be great! Thanks!

There are voice activated tape recorders out there from 10 and 20 years ago. Not expensive.
