If you have to learn it within a year try to find people that speak Spanish very well and have them speak to you in Spanish only all the time. For the times when you are alone; watch tv in Spanish and listen to the Spanish radio stations. Do it every day.
Last tip: you will know that you are learning it when you have a dream in Spanish.
I hope this helps.

Go live in Spain, or even Mexico- but not a tourist area of either country. Problem with that is they are both rather expensive. Buy many books and books on tape. If you're in school then sitting in on a spanish class or signing up for one would definitely help. Set aside two or three hours each day to just do spanish. Play spanish in the background as you study verb tenses. Learn each tense one at a time, starting with present tense. Only having a year to do it will be extremely difficult, but if you're dedicated then you can do it. Also, try interacting with people who speak spanish. Tell them you are trying to learn and they'll most likely be more than willing to help you out.

These days you can learn how to speak Spanish over the internet. Check out this online course, it's voted as the best Spanish online course of all time: http://www.rocketlearner.com/spanish The course is very easy to follow, I was able to learn Spanish in just 3 months.
I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a Spanish language teacher but that would have cost me over $800 per month. Good thing with this internet, $800 it's a lot of money for me.

For me, the best way to learn Spanish (or any other language, for that matter) is through music and movies. I found out that if I find something that is not boring (like big Grammar books, etc) I will end up putting more time on it, and that way I learned faster. It becomes interesting watching different movies in Spanish, like movies from Latin America, movies from Spain, etc.. you get a nice glimpse at the different cultures within the language.

ive heard of great success stories of people who joined those study abroad programs where they send you to a latin american country for about a month for you to live in a house with a host and people tend to pick up the language very fast. even if u cant speak a lot of it, youll be able to understand most of it. after all, youll have to. you'll have no other choice. this would be a great summer trip and a learning experience.
