This has nothing to do with how the tablets are made. The answer above is correct - the citrate and the hydrochloride forms of diphenhydramine are just different salts. Different salts have different properties, such as solubility, and may improve the bio-availability of the drug in question. They also contribute to the stability of the drug (i.e. the ability to maintain efficacy over storage time). There are many things that the difference in salts can affect, but in marketed products such as Excedrin PM and Tylenol PM (or Simply Sleep) there is virtually no difference between the 2 diphenhydramine forms.

RE:
What is the difference between the two sleep aids Diphenhydramine Citrate and Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride?
The Diphenhydramine Citrate can be found in Excedrin PM and the Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride can be found in Tylonal's Simply Sleep. What is the difference in the two ingredients?

Not really anything. They are both the same medication, just the citrate is a form of salt that is more readily absorbed in the body than the hcl salt. Also, they are both the same active ingredient in Benadryl... it's an antihistamine but also serves as a sleep aid.

Both pills are basically the same.... the main ingrediant Diphenhydramine is what you are looking at when you take these pills... the other (HCl and Citrate) are just additives to make the pills.
Like the paste that holds them together.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!

I'd stay away from both. The most effective sleep aid is absolute darkness. Or get the room as dark as possible. A blue LED shining at you from across the room will keep you awake. I'm not kidding.
