..now i cant move the car at all and if i try i hear a LOUD grinding and vibrating noise. So do i have to replace the whole rear end of the car.....or just the differential, particularly the pinion flange or ring/pinion??? (when i jacked the car up and rotated the rear tires i could clearly see how the pinion-differential connection appeared to be lose. how can i fix this problem?) o this is on a 2000 v6 mustang, my other one doesnt have this problem.

You probably will have to replace the ring and pinion gears - which always should be replaced as a set. Considering what happened, though - I would replace the entire differential with the ring and pinion because of all the debre from the ring and pinion getting into the differential. The good news is that there should be no reason you would need to replace the entire axle.

You will need to either replace the whole differential, or replace the ring and pinion gears. It is possible some of the bearings or planetary gears (if any) are damaged as well.

When replacing the ring and pinion, there are tolerances that must be met or the gears will deteriorate quickly. These are adjusted using shims on either side of the gear set within the housing and on the pinion shaft. What you will set is the exact point at which the gears mesh. It should be examined again after some use to insure it is still correct and hasn't moved.

Its not rocket science, but its not simple either.

You definately need a ring and pinion set, been there done that twice! Pick up an issue of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords magazine any vendor in there will be cheaper than the dealer. You may even try a junk yard, you may be able to find a complete rearend at a reasonable price, good luck!

Judging by what you said, my guess is you took out
your ring and pinion (rear gears).

Could you find one at a local junk yard? Preferably one with the same numerical gears in it as your old one? Just swap out the whole thing? (Just curious, is this a manual transmission car??)
