What is the difference between purple hull peas and black eyed peas?

To me they taste the same and even look the same.

There is a difference in the taste and texture. Black eye peas taste coarse and sort of crumbly. Fresh black eye peas have a green hull.
Purple hull peas are a little smoother in texture and have a creamy taste. Fresh purple hull peas have a variegated to dark purple hull when mature.

Purple hulls are sweeter and least coarse, and my favorite of all peas. I am from Memphis, TN and have tried all peas but the only one I end up craving and coming back to is the purple hull pea. Also, some may eat the black eyed pea at New Years for good luck, and if I can t find any purple hulls maybe, but, I will still crave the purple hulls and not feel lucky until I ve had a bowl of these with some good corn bread to top it off, lol....:)))

They look similar but they are different. I like them both and bieng from the South, you know that when you shell purple hull peas your fingers will be purple. I like black eyed peas better.

They are both "Southern Field Peas." There are many different kinds of southern field peas. Black-eyed peas are one kind. Pink and purple hull peas are a VARIETY of black-eyed peas.
