I've been running sockless for 8 years. Here are some good and bad things:
I like to feel my foot in my sneaker. It feels better.
I have to keep my sneakers outside or else they will stink up the house. My feet reek when I get done running. My feet blister if I run more than 5 miles without socks. I wear socks if I run 5 miles or more.
If my feet didn't blister, I would never wear socks with sneakers. I've never tried on sneakers in the store without socks.
I think the best sneaker to wear without socks are New Balance 716.

I go sockless in my sneakers pretty much all the time, and I prefer not to wear socks in any of my sneakers. I like it when I see people sockless in sneakers and even going for a run in the neighborhood. I have been wearing my sneakers sockless for most of my life. I always try on sneaker sockless at shoe stores. I did that about a month ago when I went to a shoe store, and I was sockless in my PUma sneakers, and I tried a few pairs of sneakers sockless. I so see other people try on sneakers sockless at shoe stores now and then.

OUCH man, that hurts my feet. Either way I think your feet sweat and stink more without socks. As long as you're showing your fit or running they'd appreciate that more, rather then looking down at your feet to make sure you're wearing socks. Forgedaboutit man. I'm sockless in sandals, my feet arent the most attractive but what guys are? haha, none! Shoe stores give you a stocking to wear if your barefoot.

Personally, most of my xc team (guys and girls) run sockless in all weather. They say it feels better, and I'd believe them. However, I can't run sockless because I've got a genetic disorder that gives me horrible blisters (my doctor told me to stop running-I told her to go to hell :)) anyway, no, it's not that gross, and it's completely normal. On the other hand, trying on shoes without socks on is pretty weird...

Disclaimer - I run with socks. That said, if it works for you then go for it. You may need to get your shoes with a little tighter fit than usual to avoid blisters, but don't let anyone else's feelings about running with socks stop you from doing it if it's what's right for you.
That said, most running stores will usually insist that you wear socks when you try on shoes. I have seen a running store that offered nylons to customers that didn't want to wear socks, but even there everyone had to wear something.

I wore sneaks with no socks for years. I liked the feel but the shoes stink and they wear out faster from the bacteria. Now I go with sport socks, the kind that come up no higher than your ankle. You hardly know that you are wearing them and the world can finally bear it when you take your shoes off. You can get all types of fungal diseases from trying on or wearing shoes with no socks.

I can't stand wearing sneaks with out socks. I just need to have that layer of cotten between me and the sneak. I even get kind of disturbed when I see people wearing any kind of shoe with out socks.

Um, it's not offensive. I doubt I'd even notice, but if I did, it wouldn't bother me. Whatever is comfortable for you.
OH, but don't try on store shoes with no socks. That's how fungus gets spread around.
