Cingular has been harrassing me for about 2 mos. now. They double charged me on my last bill (I know for a fact I did not use that many minutes) so I refused to pay. They charged me with several fees and hiked the intrest to like 20% or something. Now they want to settle. I've always paid my bills before and don't want bad credit. Should I take it or will they go lower as time goes on. Don't even judge me for not paying already. Why should I if they were wrong!

The first thing to realize is that you have a right to officially "dispute" the bill. Contact the credit bureau and tell them that you are disputing the bill. Cingular will need to provide you with the detailed itemized list of calls that were made on the account. If they are able to prove that the account is truly owed the amount they claim, I would take the settlement. Yes, over time they may settle for less...but you state that you don't want bad credit. The longer you wait...the worse your credit. And just so you know, they are probably already nailing your credit score. Companies don't usually offer to settle or send something to collection until it is a mark on your credit report. My guess is that if you obtained a free credit report (as you are entitled to once per year) you would see the bill show up as delinquent under the Cingular name AND ALSO an additional trade with the collection company showing as a collection (I9 in credit terms). These two things together are probably causing some distress to your score. I'd say settle ASAP and cut your losses.

Good Luck!

Cingular is know for being rather inept at billing problems. You should.

I was overcharged because I made changes to my service two months in a row and their system cannot handle anything difficult.

I really feel for the people that work there since all of us who have to talk with them think they are idiots when the policies and systems of the company are at fault.

I pursued it several times and ask for the problem to be escalated and kept calling them back over a three month period and finally got the wrong items removed.

I sure hope they go out of business!!! I don't think the name change to AT&T will help them in the least.

What you describe is onyl a piece of what I experienced wtih them. In the end I was able to cancle my accounts no charge on the grounds they were in breach of contract. I have had better luck with U.S. Cellular and Verizon. DO NOT GIVE IN, find a copy of contract agreements and study it.
There is also the Better Business Bureau that oyu can report them to.

Doesn't matter whose right or wrong at this point.

If your credit history means anything to you -- settle.

What's the point in being right, if you have to be a credit hazard to celebrate the victory (with no decent FICO score)?
