I had posted a little while ago regarding my mothers dog in labor all day, well thank you everyone for your answers...but when I called my mom to tell her to take the dog to the vet, she had just had 1 puppy! So she should be ok, right? And also, can my mom move the puppy closer to the mom with gloves?

dogs can be in labor for hours i believe it can even be four hours in between each puppy. i should know by now my dog has had three litters. she will be fine. they have instinct and know what to do. if she needs help then she will let you know. it is ok to touch the puppies if neccasary. you dont need to wear gloves.just make sure the "cord" is not attached after the puppies are born. the mom will clean them well enough but sometimes they will need to be snipped. mom will put them in her mouth and even look like shes hurting them but she is just moving them and helping them. mom will not want to eat or probably even want to get up. i would leave a bowl of water where she can reach without getting up. just keep mom and puppies warm and as dry as possible. dont worry about bathing the pups or anything.

How many puppies were SUPPOSED to be born?

Many times, puppies can become stuck in the birth canal during labor. If not taken care of, the puppy will die, along with any other puppies still in the womb. If the owner is unaware that this is even going on, the deteriorating bodies of the dead puppies will poisen the mother dog's body and she too can become fatally ill.

i HIGHLY recommend that your mom take the dog to the vet, so a professional can make sure there are no more puppies still in the birth canal or womb.

good luck.

I would still contact the vet.

If the ***** trusts your mom, handling the pups should be fine. I wouldn't use gloves though. You mom MUST be very careful and gentle with the new borns. Gloves will not allow for her to be as careful as without them.

She is a Shih Tzu breeder and she will walk you through everything you need to watch for and do. She includes what to do in case of emergency. Good luck to you! And again, keep us informed!

She still needs to call a vet because her dog may still be having problems. As long as the dog will allow it, your mom can touch the puppy.

She may be able to have the rest of the pups on her own. She needs to be watched carefully all night. Do you know how many pups are expected? If she was indeed in labor all day, she may be too tired to push the others out. It is okay to handle the pups. I handle mine from the time they are born, helping with the whelping, and aftercare. Hope everything goes well with the rest of the litter!

If more than 4 hours go by before the next one comes, I would see the vet tonight.
