I'm thinking about spending anywhere from 500-1000 bucks on a stereo for my compact-SUV. What can you tell me about them? Wheres a good place to go, and how long would it take to get it installed?

Well, what kinda truck is it, what year, and I can tell you how hard or easy it'll be. Not for nothing, people overestimate systems for cars. They are very simple with the right tools. If you are installing a headunit and new speakers-you should buy your products at an online wholesaler. I've been going to one for years its called www.ikesound.com
It all depends on how simple or advanced you want installed. just a plain old Cd player or Tape player or a combo, with Satellite radio cabability, RCA's to hook up an amplifier, it goes on and on.
If you need just message me or other people on here.

Since you're on a budget, you probably don't want to go super high end. You'll probably want to spend $300 or so on a nice cd player, and another $500 on upgrading all your speakers. With whatever left over, you might be able to find a decent 4-channel amplifier for them. But if you're talking specifically about adding a subwoofer to your system, that's a different story. On top of the $300 for a new cd player, you could spend about $200 and get a dual 2ohm 12" Alpine Type-R sub, so you can wire it down to 1ohm. Then spend maybe around $300 or so for a class D mono subwoofer amplifier (one that puts out roughly 800w-1000w RMS). Spend the rest of your money on wiring and wood and build your own box.

Buy all this stuff online, it's much cheaper that way. And then grab a friend or read up online and install it all yourself, it really isn't difficult at all.

You can get a very nice system for a lot less money than that if you shop around, but it,s your money. You can check out Best Buy,Circuit City or even a Walmart. Or just do a web search for car stereo,s.Also check out CNET for reviews on different systems.
