If you have a FAX modem, you're halfway there.

The FAX component is not automatically installed, so you will have to go to the Control Panel, Add/Remove, and add the component, (not a program -- a component) the FAX.

After that, FAX will appear in your list of printers. When in a Word document, click File, Print, and select FAX as your printer.

Your PC will have to be on and the FAX console enabled in order to receive a FAX. The FAX will have to be configured. Read the settings carefully. If you set it to answer all calls, the FAX will think every phone call is a FAX. I have mine set to manually receive a FAX. I advise anyone wishing to send me a FAX to giv eme a quick phone call before sending.

A word of caution: if at any time a FAX fails, delete it from the outbox before you shutdown. If you don't, the next time you power on, your PC will try to send the FAX before everything is loaded and your PC will hang.

If you are using Windows, you may already have access to FAX software! :)

Go to Control Panel
Select Add / Remove Programs
Select Add / Remove Windows components (on the left in XP)
Select FAX or Fax Services and click Next. Follow the prompts.
Now in MS Word for instance, you can type your document and then go File / Send To / and select Fax.
