Like many of the other folks have said dogs bark for many reasons. However if your dog barks a lot when you are at work or if you put him/her out in the yard for hours, oftentimes dogs will bark because they are bored and need to use up the energy they generally have. Some dogs have a condition called separation anxxiety and will begin to bark the moment you leave the house or apartment. This can be extremely annoying to your neighbors and needs to be addressed by an animal behaviorist. They teach both you and the dog to overcome the stress that causes it to bark.

Most dogs bark because they want something, but once a dog becomes loyal, it will start barking to protect you. Sometimes you have to teach it to bark at some people or things and to leave alone others.

There are alot of reasons they bark, mainly to protect their owners and their surroundings. I think it is a good thing. Chances of a robber coming to rob your house will be a lot less if they hear a dog barking.
