In my experience, most of the time it's a matter of ignorance, and there are a couple factors. First of all, it's often a low-income single mother, who is utterly uneducated about nutrition. (Before you jump me about that comment, I'm a single mother, and I know that not all single mothers overfeed their kids junk food.)
Additionally, food is comfort. As a child we were poor, and I remember special outings consisting of a $.35 Rite Aid ice cream cone. I remember being rewarded for good grades with high-fat high-sugar treats. It becomes a habit - kid skins his knee, give him a popsicle. Kid throws a tantrum in the grocery store, let her have that candy bar. Food becomes a response to emotion.
I also know a mother who is so anti-confrontational that since Day 1, when her son balked at healthy food, she simply gave in and fed him the cheetos, or the white bread and jelly sandwiches, or the cookies, whatever. To this day, he's never really developed a taste for healthy foods, and he's 7. He practically lives on junk food.
I heard about the child you're referring to, and I've seen many others on TV as well. It makes me sick, and sad, and angry. But I really think we have to understand that these people don't do this to their children, or to themselves, on purpose. They need education, they need counseling, they need support. Preferably before the child reaches 300 pounds.

not 300 at 5. that is way too much. usually there average weight is 40 pounds. but it is a good idea if they were just chubby. because they have a better chance to slim out when they get older. chubby not fat, just chubby

That little girl has a disorder and cannot stop eating. It has nothing to do with the parents.
Most 5 year old girls are not that big.

Ignorance regarding what it means to eat healthy, prepare and shop for healthy food, and taking the time required to make healthier choices. Fat kids are raising fat kids due to ignorance. Sort of bland and blunt, but it's reality. If you don't know any better, you don't do better.

Maybe they think they are being good others by giving their kids what they want. Like c'mmon what little kid doesn't want to eat junk all day.
