If you mean the reliability of your stock VW motor. There are a few things to keep in mind. It is an air cooled motor so by helping it to keep cool is important. Make sure the exhaust system has no leaks. Minimize the oil leaks if any, and keep the engine clean of any leaky oil. Make sure the rubber seal that goes around the engine is in good shape. It keeps the hot air coming from the exhaust pipes from entering the cooling fan on top. Also be sure the heater hoses are intact. If not, a big lose of cooling air.
I hope that helps some.

Make sure you do all the scheduled maintence, that is in the book you get when you buy it, make sure you change the oil and put the right gas grade in. Unfortunately, some people don't realize that not all new VW's can run on regular gas. For instance mine needs at least mid-grade.

adjust the valves, and check the timing, change the oil. It will not help the engine, but if you wash and wax the hood, it will increase your miles per gallon, of gas.
