Believe it or not, your puppy just knows that when he says "momma" he gets a treat, and he will continue to say it every time he wants a treat. Lots of animals do things like this for different behaviors (sit, beg, lie down) that they know will get them the good food. You have trained your puppy to call you momma so now you need to say something cute when he does it, like 'who spoils you rotten?' and when he says it, give him a treat.. soon he will learn that when you ask him that, it is a cue to call you momma! Neat huh!? People have also trained their dogs to "count" or multiply or add by having them bark the answer to a simple (or difficult) problem. Well, the dog can't actually do math, but what he does know, is that when he starts barking, the owner is tense until he barks the correct number of times. Let's say the answer was three, so the dog keeps barking until the third bark, when the owner will get all excited and say Good Boy and give him treats. You see, he doesn't know the answer is three, he would have kept barking if his owner would not have rewarded him after the third bark :)

Though not very common, some dogs have the ability to mimmick some human speech. He does not, however, truly know what he is "saying". He has tied that particular vocalization to a treat. It is a pretty rare thing, though. Enjoy it!

I think he is smart enough to make that sound when he wants a treat. I have a cat that does it. It is really cute.

since attention from you is in itself a reward for the puppy and for a grown dog i don't really know how you could determine in a real life setting what the real answer to your question is .

he knows that that sound means you'll reward him. if you like to think he's calling for momma then he is.
