its so the body can fully relax before going into sleep
it releases the tension and nerves in your body, so the body is the most relaxed that it can be

You fall asleep in stages starting with Stage 1 very light sleep, you feel drowsy and relaxed, your eyes roll from side to side, heart and respiratory rates drop slightly. Stage 2 light sleep body continues to slow down 40-45% of your total sleep is stage 2 Stage 3 the heart and respiratory rates, as well as other body processes, slow further b/c of the domination of the parasympathetic nervous system. blah blah stage 4 is supposed to restore your body physically, during this stage, the eyes roll, and dreaming. And the stages go up and down through the entire time you're asleep.
