You can do OK at an auction, or you can waste a lot of money. You have to know what you are looking at.
I assume you are talking about a public auction, rather than a dealer only one.
There are several autions. There is one in DC and a couple in PG county.
You will find that there are three types of vehicles in a public auction. There are cars there that were donated to a charity. There are cars that are put in the aucton by dealers. There are also govenment and business fleet vehicles.
Charity donations usually have some sort of mechanical problems. People do not usually give cars to charity that are in good shape, especially with the way the tax laws are now.
Dealer vehicles are usually cars that the dealer took in trade, and they do not want to sell on their lot. It may be that they do not want to warranty the vehicle, or it may need too much work to pass inspection.
Government and fleet vehicles can be a good buy, or can be trouble, Certain counties take better care of their vehicles than do others, and you might even find that different departments from the same county do things differently.
At most auctions, you pay a deposit to register. This gives you a bidder card, that is required to bid on any vehicle! If you are the high bidder, your deposit is applied to the purchace price of the vehicle. If you do not buy anything, you get your deposit back when you turn in your bidder card!!!
You want to check out the vehicle(s) that you are interested in as well as you can. Set yourself a top price. Be sure you allow for any buyers fees that the auction charges!! Bid only up to your set price. Do not allow the heat of the moment to let youget carried away.
I like Colonial Auto Auction in Upper Marlboro. I have gotten some good deals there on fleet vehicles.

Repokar.com is an online public auto auction and it is a good start to find your vehicle because they are also auctioning cars which are prior car-rental cars, off-lease used cars, repossessed used cars, government used cars, fleet lease cars, repo cars, bank cars. To ensure you buy a quality used car, they offer Post-sale inspection and Pre Sale inspection for a nominal fee.
