The car broke down the other day, the shcronizer was shot. We got another one and replaced it tonight. The car started fine and was driving fine. My husband took it 10 minutes away and while he was driving home, he went up an overpass and when he was at the top, the WHOLE CAR DIED. Now he thinks we should get a new battery and try that, I think its a waste of time. Does anyone know what we should do??? HELP!

You mention that you had the SYNCHRONIZER replaced. This means that your '98 Explorer is equipped with either the 4.0L OHV V6 or the 5.0L V8, but NOT the 4.0L SOHC engine. WHY was the synchronizer replaced? Was the cam sensor that sits on top replaced as well? Was it making a squeaking and chirping noise and/or running rough? Those are the only two reasons that would lead to replacing this part. WHY does your husband think the battery is bad? Is it the result of trying too many times to restart the engine that drained it? Was the synchronizer TIMED properly when it was replaced? Failure to do so would lead it to run rough and stall. WHO did the replacement? Was the 'check engine' light on? If so, what were the codes? Sorry for all the questions, but the more information YOU can provide, the quicker your problem can be solved. There really are only two reasons for any gasoline engine not to start, and that is lack of fuel, and/or lack of spark. Hope this helps.

Need more info, a shcronizer is not a part on a car. Are you talking about a starter motor or an alternater? What was it exactly that you replaced? When the vehicle died did the engine simply stall and then would not crank over? Or did it die and then engine still cranks? If it died but still cranks over you could be dealing with an ignition issue or possibly a fuel delivery issue. Also is the Check Engine light on? There could also be a sensor causing the trouble. There are too many variables. Your best bet may be to take it to a credible mechanic and have them look at it.

I would take the battery out and have it tested first, you can have them tested at almost any auto parts store. If the battery is dead have them test to make sure it doesn't have a bad cell. If everything checks out OK with the battery, its probably going to be your alternator you can also take that in and have it checked. I would have everything tested first before trying to guess whats wrong it will save a lot of unnecessary expenses.Hope I helped a little bit. Good Luck

I'm just going to make a suggestion here ,it might be a good idea to have it checked out by a good mechanic.all of this buying parts can get really expensive after a while,at least you could get a hands on answer to what might be causing this to happen to it,its way better than spending money on something that might not fix it,good luck with it ,i hope you all get it going.

I really doubt the battery is the problem. It's time to take it to a qualified mechanic and have it looked into. It would help if you knew the error codes in the suv's computer.

That's right, stop throwing parts at it, get a diagnostic done and you'll save money and get it fixed. It's not the battery.
