Catholics understand Mary better than any other Christians, and that's good, because Mary has always faithfully reminded everyone only to do whatever Jesus says.

Jesus gave Mary to all of us, so she could occassionally pick us up, dust us off, and send us on our way, just as she so often did for him.

And having a close and loving relationship with the Mother of God in no way detracts from the prasie and worship that we give to God alone.

Regarding the Rosary: There is no requirement that anyone pray the Rosary. It is simply a widely accepted, and highly recommended form of prayer.

The bulk of the Hail Mary prayer consists of the words of the angel Gabriel, exactly as found in scripture, when he announced to Mary that God had chosen her to be the mother of his divine son, and then the words her cousin Elizabeth spoke, also exactly as reflected in scripture, when Mary came to visit her.

As such, all of these words speak not just of Mary, but of Jesus, as well as the fulfillment of God's ancient promise to send a Messiah who would redeem mankind.

Meditating on the various mysteries also enhances one's appreciation of scripture.

So if you're feeling guilty about somehow giving too much honor and praise to Mary, you're missing the whole point.

Mary could do nothing without God's grace. So everythnig Mary ever did, and continues to do, is by the power of, and in accord with, the express will of God.

While the rosary is a major devotion, it's not obligatory. You don't have to pray the rosary to be a good Catholic with a good prayer life. It's very understandable too considering you've had some weird experiences regarding the rosary. I used to know some very strange people that believed Mary said world was going to end in 2000 who always prayed the rosary and talked about Mary. It weirded me out and turned me off from the rosary and Marian prayers for awhile too. But fortunately there are other ways to pray.

If I were you, I would take a break from praying the rosary for awhile. You might find that later on you'll want to pray it again. In the meantime try other devotions and prayers. Adoration is great if you have the opportunity to do so. If you like the long, meditative aspects of the rosary, you may find praying chaplets helpful - especially the Divine Mercy chaplet. It's the most famous chaplet and you'll find lots of info on it online.

Don't beat yourself up over feeling uncomfortable. Emotions and feelings can be really strange - there's often no rhyme or reason to them. They aren't always under our control - we can't *choose* to feel comfortable about things we feel uncomfortable about. And sometimes for whatever reason we feel uncomfortable with something that we rationally know is benign. But remember that it's not a sin to simply have a feeling or emotion. What matters is what you do with it. You sound like you've got your priorities in order. Just keep following God and stay close to Him in prayer. If later on He wants you to encounter him in praying the rosary, you'll know.

Read "True Devotion to Mary" by St. Louis de Montfort.

There is a short version of it on the internet called "The Secret of Mary":
http://www.ewtn.com/library/Montfort/SECRET.HTM

Here is the introduction:

"1. Here is a secret, chosen soul, which the most High God taught me and which I have not found in any book, ancient or modern. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, I am confiding it to you, with these conditions:
(1) That you share it only with people who deserve to know it because they are prayerful, give alms to the poor, do penance, suffer persecution, are unworldly, and work seriously for the salvation of souls.
(2) That you use this secret to become holy and worthy of heaven, for the more you make use of it the more benefit you will derive from it. Under no circumstances must you let this secret make you idle and inactive. It would then become harmful and lead to your ruin.
(3) That you thank God every day of your life for the grace he has given you in letting you into a secret that you do not deserve to know. As you go on using this secret in the ordinary actions of your life, you will come to understand its value and its excellent quality. At the beginning, however, your understanding of it will be clouded because of the seriousness and number of your sins, and your unconscious love of self.

2. Before you read any further, in an understandable impatience to learn this truth, kneel down and say devoutly the Ave Maris Stella ("Hail, thou star of ocean"), and the "Come, Holy Spirit", to ask God to help you understand and appreciate this secret given by him. As I have not much time for writing and you have little time for reading, I will be brief in what I have to say."

just a thought, maybe you feel uncomfortable because of all the attacks or pressure that fundamentalists throw around about the blessed mother and repetitious prayer,if that is the case then renew your faith to her and harden your will to block these false teachers out. the blessed mother is very important to us all and i am glad you realise this. it may help you if you go to church and pray the rosary there, other idea may be to start your own prayer sessions or pray the rosary with a friend or two. just remember it is important and i hope your discomfort will quickly pass. pray before the rosary and fasting may also help. good luck and god bless.

My suggestion would be to continue to pray the Rosary and pray for comfort. I do not know why you feel uncomfortable...are you Catholic?

The Rosary is a beautiful prayer and meditation. It's wonderful to think of our Blessed Mother and Savior and meditate on the mysteries. Try not to focus on your discomfort and focus on the beauty of God and the wonderful mysteries.

As an ex-catholic I know it is far fetched you would hear my say but I'll express the other pejorative view anyway . Give up the superstitious beliefs of yesterday and your confusion will soon disappear. It's a labor of futility to maintain the imaginary precepts of antiquated concepts in the light of an abundant mountain range of scientific knowledge as is present in our times . good luck I wish I had more time as I could open endless doors of truth in fact.http://youtube.com/watch?v=zDHJ4ztnldQ

Yes, keep praying.

Can you describe your discomfort with more details? I don't really understand how you feel.

Just keep praying to GOd in Jesus' name for increased faith. Keep praying to Mary that she may increase your faith in JEsus Christ.
