Windows XP for these reasons:
It is relatively stable
I have LOTS of programs, many older, and most would not work on Vista, and I use particular versions of software out of preference and don't want to upgrade many of them.
I am accustomed to XP, like it, and don't have a need to upgrade ... if I was a heavy duty gamer or Video creator, might consider vista, but i am not.
I don't want the headaches of a new O/S and the inevitable bugs!!

If Vista is like anything else Microsoft has produced, it's probably best to wait for at least 9-12 months before installing it. It is bound to be buggy (there are already security issues). I would not recommend upgrading your existing XP computer, but rather buying a new machine with Vista as the OS (in about a year, or at least back to school time). The Vista basic package includes stuff that is available free on the Internet from the Micorsoft Update site (Windows Defender, and Windows Media Player 11, and IE7 (which is VERY unstable). Do yourself a favor - wait a year, and then consider buying a new machine.

XP for at least the next 6-8 months. I'll let everybody else work out the bugs before I deal with it.
Sooner or later you'll have to go to Vista but not for a while yet.

Before you buy VISTA read the articles at:

Linux operating systems are excellent. Try out one of the free distributions. My favorite is UBUNTU. You can download it, or order a CD, at
http://www.ubuntu.com .
You will also get all the software, that you will ever need, FREE - See
