before races (meaning about 1.5 to 2 hours before), I always have a banana and/or a bagel. for some reason or another, they always seem to help calm you down and still get you through a race. might i also recommend a good granola bar?

Edit: Normally, it's one of those mini-bagels w/o cream cheese. never really tried running with the cream cheese on it, but i imagine a tiny bit wouldnt hurt too much.

Bananas, salt, or Potassium pills. Cramps are caused by a drop in the potassium level. I keep little packets of salt with me when I run.

Potassium is supposed to be good for muscle recovery. While it would be good to eat one after a work out to get over the cramps, maybe it would be better to have it before your workout so it is already in your system.

I've heard bananas do help because of how high in potassium they are.

Banannas are always good to have - rich in potasium.
