what is directX and why most of the games require directX to play?

Isn't it the video card driver is doing the graphing work?

direct x is a program is a multimedia program which allows programs to interface with and use built in high speed 3D graphic routines on graphic cards for faster processing. a video card is a chip which has all the graphics put it needs a program to help it along the way
