Why do you feel Creationism is essential to being a Christian?
There's no reason to think the accounts have to be taken literally.
And plenty of Christians believe in Evolution.

"Why can't the christain faith take a stance in anything they believe in?" ... We do, it's called the Bible.
"Examples are when it was believed that the earth was the center of the universe" ... okay it was believed that, but what did the Bible say? Did the Bible ever once say that the earth is the center of the universe? No
"I just need some kind of logical reassurance that there is some creditablity to what the bible has to say" ... hon, that logical reassurance is supposed to be the blessings in your life. Have you not been using your faith? Don't you know of your own account that what the Bible says is true? If that's the case, then you need to stop trying to "help" others, and start actually living the Word in your own life.
"It seems like faith alone doesnt cut it anymore when people who were faithful have got proven wrong" ... how wrong you are. Faith in God will never prove to be 'foolish', and while I am proven wrong daily, the word of God stands firm.

Jeanna S: Don't know where you studied astronomy, but you've got it wrong. The distance between Earth and Sol does indeed change, but it's nowhere near twelve inches per year. Have a look:
http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/nov2000/973968290.As.r.html
Enjoy.
Adam: Others have observed that what you're looking for is not proof but reassurance. You'll not find it here. Remember, faith is the evidence of things NOT seen -- and if you insist on seeing, then obviously your faith is just not working for you.
But keep thinking about it. In fact, you have no choice but to think about it. And as another responder has already observed, we atheists will be waiting for you if you decide that you want to hear what we know.
Whatever you do, good luck and best wishes.

You know I remember hearing this really trite saying from some probably not so educated speaker, but for some reason it has stuck with me.
"the bible will never disprove science, and science will never prove the bible" or something like that. ( I don't need any rude, disrespectful remarks from people angry at all Christians..)
I too have had a crisis of faith recently, but you know, God is still faithful. Hang on, keep seeking, and remember that God is big enough to handle all your doubt and even anger, even if the church isn't. And as for the fool part, if man could get right, then they would quit needing a saviour.
Sorry, I can't argue evo./crea. I just had to get to the point where I said it's God I serve, not the law.
C.S. Lewis is always a huge help in these things too, if you haven't read his works already. Mere Christianity is too cool for school, right??

There is plenty of literature to disprove evolution,it's just not announced to the science books and magazines because it's considered religious and the secular world keeps those things away from the rest of the world. I just finished reading The Case for the Creator by Lee Strobel (he also has The Case for Christ and The Case for Faith). I read the 1st book and am on the 2nd. He was an athiest and his wife became a Christian and he set out to disprove her and ended up finding evidence that changed his mind. I have never believed in evolution, but I wanted fuel to match what a lot of people talk about on here. Don't fall for the lies they tell you over and over again. As a matter of fact science is disproving so many theories of evolution that they are changing their tunes as well. Science is finding a way to incorporate religion into their studies. Some of the most intelligent scientists are realizing how wrong they were. Every time a theory is proven wrong, they come up with a 'how about this' and it starts again. There is no way our planet came about by accident. There is no way humans came from different upgrades over millions of years. Don't let the devil shake your faith because that is exactly what he wants to do. It gets harder and harder to be a Christian because morals get shredded by non believers. There used to be a time when a good percentage of people waited until marriage, and now it's the norm to sleep with everyone to make sure your sexually compatible with the person you marry. That's not what God wants. We keep stripping our morals until eventually the real world won't know what's right and wrong. My suggestion to you is pray to God and put on your armour, read the books I mentioned and talk to someone in your church. If you don't have a home church, get in contact with a friend or family member that can help keep you on the right path. As Christians we are sure of one thing and that's God loves you,and always will no matter what. God bless.

God created everything. How he chose to do it does not matter to me. Maybe it was evolution, maybe what we call evolution was an ability to adapt that the creator built into e very living thing. What the atheist would ask you to believe is that it all just started by accident. To me that is the explanation that really takes a simpleton to believe. How many golf balls have formed simply by the right combinations of atoms falling from the sky? But this is how they tell us all life started. What a bunch of junk science. Just remember that there is a lot we are not capable of knowing yet and have faith in your creator. The way He chose to do it is not important to us right now. Read in His word my friend.

Hi Adam,
What you are requesting is for someone to convince you that what you want to believe is true.
Sorry it won't work. You have the same issue as many Christians who loose faith. You faulter at the suggestion of that which you lack knowlege. Evolution has not been proven. Many of great intelegent scientific thought have dismissed it as a theory of origion. The attacks of men do not disprove the word of God.
You have one of three options:
You can close your mind and choose to believe on faith only and struggle as you have.
You can deny what you want to believe and rationalize your lack of faith.
You can remain open minded, search for truth and understanding in the natural laws that have been proven and the word of God cutting through the falicies and failure of men in translation and complilaton. Ponder, work it out for yourself and take your applied decission before God in humble prayer with a contrite spirit and willing heart.
If you are willing to do the latter as outlined in various scripture, He has promised to confirm it to you. I promise you that if you do, you will never willingly deny the truthfulness of the plan of happiness we are all a participant in.
Man's wisdom is faulty by nature of the state we are in. It was ment to be so at this time. That is not to say that science or the pursuit of truth is in any way a bad thing, it is what it is about, we are all working toward perfection or a perfect knowledge in one way or another.
"Why can't the Christian faith take a stance on anything they believe in?" A better question is possibly why can't you?
The word of God has never changed he is the same yesterday and will be tommorow. Man has done a fair job in distoritng the word of God but it is still there. You can choose what to do with it. Will you do the small things required to receive the confermation you desire or will you, like many fail, and rationalize that it is not possible.
It's time you take a stand. Your struggle is self made not that of Christianity.
My love and best wishes!

Listen, the bible isn't science. It is a collection of parables and stories. If you can get something good out of those stories, that's great. If it help you to find your "moral compass", fantastic. But please stop trying to make it into the ultimate answer for everything. It is not based in reality, and reality will not conform to the bible. The bible is not what really happened any more than Roman or Greek mythology is what really happened. You would think it was foolish for someone to try to prove that the constellation of Orion really is the body of an ancient hunter in the sky and not just a collection of burning balls of hydrogen millions of miles away; similarly, it is foolish to try to prove that there really was a world wide flood 4000 or so years ago. Accept actual reality and move on.

Men are fallible and make mistakes, even theologians. But the Word of God is true and God indeed created all things in 6 days. Bear in mind that scientists have been proving each other wrong much more often so they have a much worse record to rely on. For almost every issue out there from creation to global warming there are scientists who disagree and they will change again 25 years from now. Now as to creation would you be satisfied if God Himself told you and wrote it down for you in stone with His own finger that He created the heavens and the earth in 6 days? Well you have the next best thing. He wrote it for Moses and told Him to write it for you and me. Its in the 10 commandments in Ex 20.
Science laughed at the History recorded in the Bible and claimed some of the civilizations mentioned never existed yet every time the shovel unearthed true evidence it verified the Word of God. I'll put my trust in the Lord.

Not all Christian denominations accept creationism literally.
Many well respected theologians consider much of the old testament as allegory and symbolic.
As an atheist, I would highly recomend you pursue the questions posed above with a dogged passion and do not rest until you find the answers you seek. And here's couple of tips: you wont find the answers here on Y! and you will not get the answers from fundamentalist believers.

Not being a Christian, but believing that Deity had something to do with why we are here, I applaud your effort to understand.
I don't believe that the ultimate issue comes down to God Vs. Science, but rather literalism versus reality.
Try reading some interesting books relating science and religion. These mostly aren't Christian texts, but they do reconcile science and faith. The Tao of Physics is a classic. A Pagan text called The Science of the Craft is wonderful as well.
Realizing that Science and faith aren't necessarily antagonists might really help you in your Christian path.
Blessings,
--Dee
