I think we will never have any more groundbreaking cures discovered for diseases, because pharmaceutical companies are simply looking to prolong or suppress symptoms to keep consumers medicated (and therefore constantly bringing in cash for the company). Am I being nihilistic? If this is true, then the capitalist system will eventually be our downfall.

And, ironically, I'm an accounting major (sigh).

you have a good point and i've heard that before but, Pharmaceutical companies take many years of research and testing then, they have to show promising results or something just to start human trials. After they get that far human tests may turn out bad forcing them to start all over again. Now, i dont believe in them doing that just to keep bringing in cash. I think they just take a very long time and alot of money before they find something and that all factors into the final cost.

even still, what you said is very possible too.

nihilistic....yes.

Guardasil is a great example. The new vaccine that will practically prevent almost all forms of cervical cancer. Sure it was created with genital warts in mind, but the fact that it was going to wipe out most forms of cervical cancer, did not seem to prevent its release.

I find it funny that everyone thinks its a conspiracy. They aren't specifically looking for patches, its just that cures are very difficult and when something is difficult, it is hard to justify throwing money at it.
