If i can invent anything, I would have to invent a machine that has the ability to invent any good thing that I would like to invent.
The first thing that would probably come to my mind assuming the machine is already available is to invent a device that would provide us peace on earth. If we can achive that peace, there is no need to invent anything at all!

What most needs to be invented is a system of government that ensures the greatest good for the greatest number of people, provides the appropriate social safety nets, and operates in such a way that greedy people can't steal the benefits from the poor and the middle class to enrich themselves and increase their power over the citizenry.
This may not sound like an engineering matter, but actually the best route to success might be to apply scientific priniciples according to engineering concepts. A detailed systems approach might be a good place to start, and engineers might be the right people to do the job. Sure as h'ell lawyers and politicians can't do it.
Fifty years ago the American Democracy came close, but then greedy people gained too much power, and we lost it. American freedom is in grave jeopardy today because of greedy madmen in positions of power.
The system of checks and balances as envisioned by the founders of this nation almost works, but it can be undermined if the greedy religiosos and politicians can succeed in ruining the education system, as they have done in this country over the last half century.
What is most likely needed is a massive overhaul of the checks and balances system to update it so that it handles the modern problems more effectively. I would love to see the engineering community take a crack at it.
Then we can talk about all the other inventions we could plan for if we could regain the freedom and prosperity we had in 1957.

I think something like the "Magic Lasso" would be excellent. Something that makes someone tell the truth, even if they resist or don't quite remember it vividly or just try to gloss over all the details.
There is no telling how much time is wasted in our lifetimes just trying to seek out the 'truth' forensically than having someone 'fess up to a mistake; whether they want to take the responsibility for it or not.
Edit: Perhaps my idea "wouldn't fly", but I think it is still something that I would like to be invented if anything (and usually anything can be) could be invented. I also think it needs to be invented.

what an awesome question you are asking...more should ask it...what should be invented...more compassion, love understanding, selfcontrole, be truthfull, ect...well what we are trying have or created already exists, we just need to discover it, what need to stay away from the most is our fears, as an example , fear of the other, fear of what others think, fear of the future, fear of not being recognized, fear of loosing an argument thinking if one is lost all others will be, fear of being fooled, not being good enough for others expectations, or not live long enough or being healthy, fear of family politics, fear of quiting a bad habit and having no other soothers to replace it, fear of life after death, fear of woman, fear of men, fear of the end of the world, ...please other readers add more to this list...but keep in mind , weather we invent a new way mechanically or electronically to make our lives easier, the real well being solution is if only we could crush all fears under our feet once and for all, how free we would live

JFalcon's idea wouldn't fly. The lawyers would figure out a way to discredit it, otherwise they would be out of a job. I would love to see a scientific study to compare the accuracy of lie detector tests against that of our jury system. Considering lie detectors are supposedly too undependable to be used as evidence, they sure get used a lot to screen people for critical positions.
The one that really counts is a controlled fusion reactor. If we don't crack the fusion challenge, the future of **** sapien will be severely limited.
