Not sure if that number is accurate, but the answer is simple.
People who are abused tend to turn to religion for solace. Throughout history, Christianity has been the favored religion of the down-trodden and abused, because it says, basically, that no matter how much your life sucks, you'll be rewarded with bliss when you die - if you follow the rules.
And wealthy people like it this way.
America is comprised mainly of immigrants, most of whom emigrated here to escape the oppression, poverty and misery of their own lands. When they came, they either brought their "savior" (Christ) with them, or they adopted him when they got here. This is because Christianity is a fantastic crutch for people too weak in character to stand on their own two feet. Christians defer to God and Christ whenever life gets too hard. It's this mindset which was probably responsible for most of their misery in the first place! Christianity is splendid at exploiting misery in its converts (just look how fast conquered nations and slaves converted to it), and ensuring inculcation into future generations.
Not surprisingly, it has become the predominant religion of the miserable masses in this country. Contrary to what Christians may believe, Christianity as a guide for living, perpetuates a "poor" type of mindset. Christians are constantly told their reward comes in the next life, not this one. (Meanwhile, let me see ANY Christian turn down a winning lottery ticket.) Any Christian who tells you they are happy being poor is full of sh*it.
By contrast, the fringes (non Christians and atheists) are an entirely different story. Our society is a capitalist one. It was built on the wealth expanding entrepreneurial mindset of our founding NON-CHRISTIAN forefathers. To accomplish this, they used (Christian) slaves as labor. Today, the masses have replaced the slaves, but the model remains the same. Put simply, the minority of people that control this country WANT the majority of people to be Christian. It makes it easier to exploit them.
Don't believe me? Just look at the demographics. Look at where the wealth is shifting in this world. Certainly not to the Christians. The wealthiest man is an agnostic, if not an atheist. The CEO's of many of the newest billion dollar companies are atheists. Science and technology are the new Petroleum and Steel. Warren Buffet is an atheist. So is George Soros and Ted Turner, and so was Andrew Carnegie. And the really odd thing is, three of the four wealthiest Americans who were ATHEISTS have donated more money to charity than anyone else in history.
In any case, the reason 90% of this country is Christian is the same reason that 10% of this country has 90% of the wealth.
Christians like to be poor.

It isnt'.
Some polls show that up to 90% of Americans believe in God, an afterlife etc. That doesn't mean they are all Christian. They could be Muslims, Jews etc (except for the afterlife part)
As to why America is so riddled with belief? Likely has something to do with the original settlers, who were from a variety of persecuted Christian sects in Europe.

You got that number from the department of pulling numbers out of our hat? Let's have some reliable stuff, hmmm?
"On Oct. 6, 2006, Laurie Goodstein of the New York Times said that the number of Evangelical Christian teenagers could be declining rapidly from 35 percent among baby boomers to 4 percent among today's teenagers, "if current trends continue.""
Note that 4% evangelical teenagers means teens who think they are evangelical, some of which might not actually be over confusion with the word's meaning.
"The Times quoted many young Christians who had trouble keeping the faith in the midst of peer pressure, consumerism, cynicism, and lust inflamed by the mass media of entertainment. According to the Barna Research Group, 9 percent of Americans are Bible-believing Evangelical Christians and 36 percent of Americans are Born-Again Christians. Barna also reports that 49 percent of Americans born between 1946 and 1964 attend church on a given Sunday, but only 43 percent of Americans born between 1965 and 1983 and 33 percent of Americans born between 1984 and 2002 do that.
You can get these at the source from NYTimes and Barna itself, so go with that. Meanwhile, what you have is lots of people SAYING their Christian when they actually are not. That is because many of the ones founding this country were Christian (not Buddhist nor Hindi) so that influence is still felt, even by those who don't wanna be one.

90% of America is Christian, when Christians choose to make the point that America is Christian. Many Protestants though, argue that Catholics aren't really Christian, so if you count them out, the percentage comes down. Too, you could discount the other denominations considered non-Christian by the fundamentalists, such as Jehova's Witness, and the Mormons.
Most people surveyed will claim to be Christian, even if they don't attend any church. It's just what they remember.
If you count those serious about their faith, the numbers drop even more.

Because in America there is freedom of religion and 90% of the population chooses Christianity. It's as simple as that.

I would seem that if this statistic was correct, than America is obviously going to S***. I believe that people are afraid of death, and they want something to look forward to. Someone would argue that it is better to believe in something, than finding out you are wrong after you die. Because if there isn't anything, you wouldn't know you were wrong about believing in something. The other reason I think that this much of America might be, is because most people weren't raised without christianity in their life. Theses people don't know anything other than how to be Christian. I can say though, that "Jesus" would not be doing half the crap that most Americans are doing. I am in no religion, because I find most religions disgusting.

I am a Christian and I do NOT believe that your statistics are accurate at all. Most of those in your survey are certainly not Christians in the true sense.
Study these scriptures and see what you think. To become a Christian:
HEAR - Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
BELIEVE - To the Prison guard in Acts 16:31 Paul and Silas said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household."
REPENT - Acts 17:30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent.
CONFESS CHRIST - Matthew 10:32 "Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
BE BAPTIZED - Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
CONTINUE TO BE FAITHFUL - Revelation 2:10b Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
Send me a note if you have questions. I am anxious to hear from you. Have a Great day.

As a Christian, I believe the figure of 90% is probably 50% to 60% too high. Like the old spiritual song says, "Everybody talkin' 'bout Heaven ain't goin' there."

I don't believe the number is even 50%. There may be 90% people in America that believe there is a God and that Jesus came to the earth, but they never have accepted Jesus as their personal and made a commitment to Him. The devil believes also, but hes not saved.

I'm not sure where you got those figures...but in any case, America does have a large number of Christians, possibly because it is one of the world's biggest religions, and the country was founded upon Christian beliefs and values.
