My 5 month old male cat sucks on his paws. Like, literally latches on to it and sucks on it like a baby on its thumb. He usually brings his back paw forward, so he can suck on it while he kneads with his front paws, all the while purring madly. Is he just weird, or do other cats do this?

Hehe... I'd say your cat is kind of wierd, but my cat used to do that when he was younger. Or even wierder, he would try and suck on my other mail cats stomache. He finally outgrew it, I think it's because he was seperated from his mom at only a few weeks. If your really worried, though, ask your vet.

Some cats suck on cloth the same way. Usually it is because they were weaned too young and sucking is still a security blanket for them. They are going back to their infancy and nursing again- that's why it is accompanied by kneading, which is also something kittens do while nursing. Kind of poignant, isn't it? He will probably do this his whole life.

I had two cats who did something similar.. One I got when he was barely 4 weeks old (the dumb ex-owners got rid of them too soon) And he would like to be cuddled like a baby and he'd start to suck on my shirt, I bought him a preemie baby pacifire and he'd suck on that all the whild kneeding and purring loudly. It really just sounds like he was taken away from him mother before he was ready.

Your cat is not weird. He was taken from his mother too soon.
I use to have a cat that didthat and would always suck on my shirt while needing and purring and I asked the vet about it because I thought it was quite strange myself - the vet said he was taken away from his mom too soon

Your cat is acting out as if he was nursing. Cats knead the breast as they are suckling, and his back paw is acting as the teat. He probably suffers from some kind of separation anxiety.

Oh! That is so cute! I'm sure he is fine.I agree that he must have been weened to soon. He is like a child sucking his thumb. At 5 month I'd take him to the Vet for neutering before he starts to spray urine all over your furniture. He won't be so cute then! It won't be his fault jut normal cat behavior.He sounds so cute. Please get the surgery and keep him that way. Male cats need early neutering.

Some cats just do things like that. Double check to make sure there isn't a wound of some sort. Sounds like it's comforting for whatever reason. LOL!

he's not weird, he was probably taken from his mother too soon and has found a way to calm himself. my cat used to suck on my sister's toes and knead the floor or blanket. he was abandoned by his mother too early and that was like his security blanket. your cat may just be missing the comfort of his mommy

This sounds very odd...........but.....my Boston Terrier used to suck on tennis balls......for the same reason as the others are answering, probably due to be taken away from their mom's too early.
It doesnt sound like a health problem, but you can call your vet if you are concerned.

we got my cat from lady that serpated him from his mom at two weeks old so she could take him with her and turns out she couldnt keep him so we took him and he had to be bottled fed so he is 7 months old and hasnt had thta bottle in almost 6months and every night he has he bottle and caries it in to his bed and nurses on it and the whole time it empty and try to take it away and he looks at you and knocks stuff of the table with his paws and crys like amoma cat calls for his kitten and oh one time i walked in on him nurseing on my male cats dick so compared to my cat your cats totally normal so it just means that he was taking away from his mom to soon
