I would go for the XTi. Reasons: it's more than $200 cheaper, and it has a sensor dust removal feature. Other features of the two bodies should be quite similar. I've had an earlier version of Digital Rebel, and I've been quite happy with it.
In general, Canon seems to be well ahead of Nikon in the low-end digital SLR market. They were the first to offer a digital SLR below $1000, and they've kept their prices below Nikon for the same, or sometimes better features.
That said, I would make to exceptions: first, obviously, if you already have Nikon lenses, you want to go with Nikon. Second, I've heard that Nikon is better with the high quality optics. So, if you think you'll be buying high-end lenses (few thousand dollars), you might look more closely into Nikon.
If none of these exceptions apply, I recommend you go for the Nikon, and invest the $200 that you save in a good lense, and perhaps a good tripod. Having good lenses and a tripod would make a lot more difference than the camera body in the quality of your pictures. Some of the lenses I recommend (the ones I own) are these: 50mm/f1.8 (this one is cheap, ~$80), 20-35mm/3.5-4.5 (I use this as my regular zoom lense), 28-105mm/3.5-4.5 (nice for the long end), and perhaps 35mm/f2 (I don't have this one, but it'd be the next one I buy).

From memory I think it was the January edition of Popular Photography (USA version - I live in Australia) had a shoot out between the 10MP DSLRs. The D80 won and in my opinion so it should. Everything about this camera is right from the quality to the ergonomics and features. Never in my life have I been more happy with a camera. The Canon certainly isn't rubbish, but I do prefer the Nikon, no question.

I have Canon lenses, therefore, I'd take the XTi. It's usually a matter of cost. The Nikon is several hundred $ more than the Canon.
The XTi has a sensor cleaner which is a huge improvement.

You will probably spend way more money on lenses than you will spend on the camera itself (and if you don't then you aren't even reaping the benefits of owning a dSLR - you might as well get a good point & shoot) so look at the line of lenses that both offer. I shoot Canon and the reason I went with canon is that I believe their lens lineup is far superior to nikon. Good luck.
