I have checked out refacing but you have to install yourself plus paint the base or apply a matching veneer.

Best you can do here is to pick up a phone book and get some estimates. You will be suprised to find out how varied the estimates will be. The price will be based off of what kind of paint you chose, as some finishes will be more expensive, and how much prep work will need to be done. Make sure you look at the estimate to see what materials are being used, and try to get your estimates based off of a specific paint. Different companies will charge different labor prices for the prep and sanding. Check references, and make sure you clearly state what you are looking to achieve. I would guess it will cost $1000-$1500 for a quality job done with quality paint.

If you make it a weekend project and choose to do it yourself than you only pay the price of paint. And if you finish and really cannot fathom what you have done you can hire someone then. Cost of paint maybe $50 max.

I just finished a similar job, and used an opaque stain. It turned out to be $1800.00 inclusive using time and materials.
