triangle for a side view? It is a common solid object you see everyday.

(I used this question when I devised the first Mensa test in San Francisco Bay Area. --- To this date, no one has ever answered it successfully on an IQ test (fill in, not multiple choice).

Dear chrissy - a car does not have a circle for a top view. And if a special car looked that way, then it would not have a rectangle from the front view. And, such a car would not be something that you (we) see everyday.

not an hour glass - that would be two triangles from front and side. Plus we don't see an hour glass everyday .

Note: everyday means over 90% of our days: fair enough?

a toothpaste tube is solid only when it is new. and when it is new it has a cap and threads tha prevents it from looking square from the front. If you squeeze it into a triangle from the side and rectangle from the front it is not solid anymore. A solid object is one that cannot change shape unless it is broken.- or words to that effect

Dear matt - I assure you it's shape is possible. Ask your grandfather and he will assure that the shape is possible. However, the shape he shows you will not be something we (you) see everyday. But use my exact words and he will show what is shaped just like I described.

"cosmic" a coffee cup that is round from the top view is not rectangular from the side view. Plus most of us see coffee cups with handles so that defeats the top view theory.

There is an answer to this - Hi Uncle Wayne : )

It has to be in the form of a solid round headed wedge, although possibly with the round head on the bottom, which would appear round from a top view. It could be a common food item, but not common in my house. It may be some form of chisel that I'm also not familiar with. It could be a tube of gel, or oil paint, but those are not solid as much as they are filled objects. There is clearly deception in this question and it's thus more of a trick question or riddle than one requiring analytical ability to solve.

"It's a wedge used to split stumps." That was my first answer. You replied that we don't see that type of wedge every day. Nevertheless from your various responses and non-responses, you seem to be confirming this item is likely wedge shaped. Someone said the round part could be on the bottom. Thus it could or might be some sort of object with a rail or blade on top, resting on a round base of an equal diameter length.
But I think you should accept those who said it was a form of wedge as giving the correct answer. Because we now are required to guess what type you have in mind - that's a bit like asking us what number you are thinking of.

I drew it out on paper but it doesn't look like a common object to me... I would have said a krusty kreme hat but the front is a triangle instead of the side...

Someone below said a toothpaste tube and I'm going with that.

I keep thinking the triangle has to be upside down, but now you say the silhouette has these qualities....

The shape i keep getting looks like a funnel with the bottom stretched out. I was thinking one of those professional frosting dispensers but after seeing the toothpaste answer, and not seeing a frosting dispenser today, I have to thumb that.

nothing, if something has a rectangular front view and a circular top view then it cant have a triangular side view. By circular it would have to have a round base. Which would mean that the side view is consistant with the front view. So it would have to come to a point to create a triangle. It is imposible maybe thats why no one can answer.

People, people, people. This man is a TROLL. And a damn good one! Think about it folks, if no member of Mensa could get the answer in 40 years, why would you think that you could? I asked my friend who is a member of Mensa and an Engineer and she had a damn good answer, but it wasn't right. I had a good answer too with a wooden kitchen match, and that wasn't right. There is no right answer. He is a TROLL.
