Well, there are four symbolisms behind the cladagh ring. My mother (we're Irish) gave me a claddagh ring on my 19th birthday and there is ALWAYS a specific way to wear it. If you are using it as an engagement ring make sure that you have the heart facing away from you on your left hand. The heart facing towards you means that you are married, which is also why a very nice claddagh ring (meaning made of gold, platinum, silver, what-have-you and a real stone) can also function as a wedding ring. If your fiance is heavily Irish, or his family is like mine and is heavily Irish and pretty much is a traditional Irish family, its very romantic and I wish more people would do it!

I think that is a great idea; both for tradition and saving money. :) You can Claddaghs which are just the heart or you can also get bands with the Claddagh printed on them. I know people who have done both.
Just make sure the heart is in so no one thinks you are available. :)

I used it as both and my husband chose a Claddagh ring for his wedding band also. You wear it heart facing in to show you're spoken for. I think my niece's hub chose a Claddagh band as well.
Look into Mullingar pewter for wedding party stuff and toast goblets- they also have a gorgeous unity candle set with the Claddagh motif.
