the last 2 weeks my dog is driving us crazy. Im sure it has 2 do w/ the colder weather. It has been about 10 this week. We have woods behind our house and many interesting things to explore. Im sure as soon as he gets too cold he wants back in but also as soon as he warms he wantsback out. after the 2nd round i ignore his whining and tell him to be quite. my husband is afraid he'll have an accident in the house and "what if he really has to go". if it was warmer out id leave him out for a while but right now hes out and its 5 degrees. he'll want in soon. ive never delt w/ this w/ any other dog any suggestions would be great. he is a 7mo male lab if it matters

"A door is something that a dog is perpetually on the wrong side of." It's a quote with a picture of a German shorthaired pointer on it we've got hung, guess where...by the door. I've had dogs just like yours. They love being outside, but equally need to repeatedly check inside just to make sure they aren't missing anything. I even have a t-shirt that says: Agenda for the day: Let the dog out, let the dog in , let the dog out, let the dog in.

Seriously, though, if your dog is comfortable out in the cold, I wouldn't worry too much about him being out. I would worry more that you are letting the dog run your life with his constant in-and-out demands. I think its time to set some limits on how often he's allowed in and out. An 8 mos lab has plenty enough energy to be very demanding. Make sure he has pottied outside and then shut the door and wait some (to you) reasonable time before letting him out again.

Let him out as often as you did before. If he spends less time out, no problem. Dogs usually do their business within the first couple of minutes out anyway. If your dog went 4 hours between trips outdoors before, he can still hold it for four hours. When he just wants to play revolving door you don't have to cater to his preference--he's only the dog and not part of the decision making process. Running in and out every few minutes is a highly annoying habit and I'm sure you don't want to live with that aggrievation.

Thank you for saying your dog is a lab! That helps. Keep him inside and take some newspaper and put it in a corner of the kitchen. And then show the dog that that is where he goes potty. He is over 6 months, he will learn. That is my best suggestion!

I had a husky/shepard mix who was an outside dog, her preference. When it got down to 15 degrees, I would bring her in only to have her pace cause she wants back out. Only thing that cured that was a dog door. lol Sorry I couldn't be much help.

if you have a garage use it. keep the door open and put a kennel out there for him. or put a timer on your counter and set it to the time you see fit for your dog to be out side. no matter how much your dog whines and scratches and barks to come in, don't until the timer has sounded then let him in. you can use the same method to keep him in if you see fit.

Could you leave the door open? It would probably let too much cold air in. Maybe installig a doggy door may be a good investment?
