I think going with the smiling is a better idea. Then gradually say hi and maybe try and start small talk some time. Im a sophomore in high school and i dont think the bump thing would work, but who knows.

The bump plan is cute, but wouldn't work in a real life situation... The smile plan is better, but will take some work on your part, especially if you don't even know the girl to begin with. Striking up random conversation with a complete stranger (especially one you think is cute) is rather hard. Smile big, say hi and if you're lucky, after a few times she might catch your drift. Then try interacting with her more.

It depends what type of person you are. Sounds like you're a little shy. I once, ages ago, felt that way about a boy who was in a different grade. I was very shy and eventually decided to write a note. One of my friends delivered it to him. After that he simply approached me and we started to talk and took it from there. If you are an outspoken person, then don't pretend to run into her. When you see the girl, walk up to her,(with a racing heart beat, no doubt) and introduce yourself. Ask her if she'd like to talk sometime. Don't be pushy though. Good luck.

alright, girls like it when guys pay attention to them. it makes us feel pretty. so.. i would smile at her, nod at her, just look at her in a happy way when you see her in the hallway. and after doing that for about a week or so, just go up to her and say hey. and if she does the little shy smile then she's probably interested and keep talking. but if she kinda looks away like she's looking for an escape and says a small hi then i wouldnt push it. but yeah, i think the approach thing would be good.

I would not bump into her she might dislike you at once! Smile-Speak like Hi -then get up your nerve and talk if she responds and you are encouraged. Hand her a Valentine. Write a note saying you would like to know her better. You will have to start somewhere.

Hahaha. Plotting to bump into someone is kind of clever but will look planned out and staged if you actually went through with it. If she looks at you, smile at her. After awhile of this, mouth something ("Hi" perhaps?) and see what happens. I'm a freshman and if a guy was staring at me and I wasn't actually looking at him I would notice and be freaked out. So don't freak her out.

It's a cute idea - but cheesy.
Just go up to her, introduce yourself, and see how the first conversation pans out. Be yourself. Don't go out of your way to do something to initiate any kind of relationship. Just do it.

Ask if you can borrow a pen, then strike a conversation... or wait until the next day to give back the pen and then strike a conversation.

yes, that would work. Dont make it obvious though. Although that would show her that you are interested in her. You also have an edge because you are a year ahead of her. Most girls like older guys. Just be straight forward and honest. :)

LOL
bump into her and be like..
"Oh, I'm sorry I... I... wow you have the most amazing eyes."
and then say some other sweet stuff and see if you can find out where she hangs in the morning, and walk up to her and just talk lol.
It could work.. good luck haha.
