Beaufort South Carolina was voted in some magazine one of the best places to retire. I have been there and it is just beautiful. There is humidity in the summer months though.....I think I could overlook that with air conditioning. You would need that in hot Arizona also.....

It depends on where you want to retire. Albuquerque is big and has a high crime rate. On the other hand, there are things to do and the temperature is mild. Roswell is the other big retirement city. Temperatures are miserable hot in the summer but mild in the winter. Crime rate is increasing at a rapid rate but the town is also growing and there are more and more things to do. Silver City is another growing retirement town. Of the three it is the one I would choose.
Being a native New Mexican I personally don't think we have a low crime rate. In fact, we have a very high violent crime rate.
Here are a few links with some statistical information:

(this one is great because you can select any city and it will give the stats on it)

The number one thing will be the cost of living in the area you would like. What might be affordable today, might be way out of reach in 30 years. I moved to North Carolina 8 years ago before retirement, to get familiar with the area.I retired 3 years ago, and now this area is going sky high. I wouldn't start looking for a place until you are 5 years from retirement.

I live in New Mexico, and so do my granparents and they love it. i know a lot of people who come here to retire. It is rarely humid here, and when it is it's not more than about 10%. It always warm for the most part, except in winter depending where you are, where it can get cold and snowy but not bad compared to Colorado, Kansas, and other places. Prices are unbelievably cheaper here. I have a friend who moved here from Virginia who got a 3 bedroom house here for the same price of his one bedroom apartment he had in Virginia. Anywhere in new Mexico is good except for Albuquerque which has a really high crime rate, or Santa Fe, which has really high prices. so yes i would recommend New Mexico! good luck!

Wyoming...Land is fairly inexpensive (except in Jackson Hole), dry weather, and low crime. Montana ...... no state tax. Colorado - beautiful, but getting expensive to purchase a house.

Depends upon what you like...
New Mexico - Arizona, perhaps even Nevada.
Who knows - what about Oklahoma? That's probably cheaper than the others
