Why is this more important now more than ever? I would like an answer.
Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be NO divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but ONE flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

MWM ... That is an excellent find and a very well-put question. Our ideals and our sense of political correctness have become very seriously compromised and corrupted in recent decades. I cannot place my finger on just one particular cause, but let me offer another example that pertains to us, the American people. Remember President Kennedy's widely-known words? He said, "Ask NOT what your country can do for you ... Ask what YOU can do for your country."

I do not know what inspired those words, but it's almost as if he knew way back on January 20th, 1961 (the day of his inauguration when he presented those words) that our national legislators were about to begin a decades-long period of give-aways as if there is an unlimited pool of money from which to pay for these things. Of course, all these give-aways and entitlements ARE costing someone some money; the answer is "all of us." But our leaders don't get that, it seems. Give away this, give away that, all to help me get re-elected. Ridiculous!

Kennedy saw it coming, I guess, but although that line is his most popular, although everyone loves to remember him for it, NO ONE seems to heed that very good advice.

Good question, sir. Thanks.

Every word that he says is 100% true. The time when this was written has no implication over the idea behind the words, an idea that is slowly being forgotten because of the sissy liberal and socialistic people that claim that everyone has a right to do what ever they want when they want. People that oppose this are the same people that either are not true Americans to start with, or they are the kind of person that pushes political correctness, and keeps wanting life to be ideal and not real. Today many people are straying away from the true American values lay down by our founding fathers. If you need help with an answer to this topic you should more concerned with your American patriotism and loyalty to the country that has given you so much than you are with some silly English project.

Roosevelt was a big patriot and a person who loved his country. Nothing wrong with that. BUT I believe everybody has the right to be treated the same way what ever his origin might be. There are no second class or first class people. An American Citizen is not better than anybody else! WE ARE ALL CITIZENS OF THE WORLD AND HUMANS. This is just an fact N O B O D Y can change.

It's impotant because our country is being divided. The American population is not being one people. We are Irish Americans, Italian Americans, African Americans, and so on. We can no longer be just Americans anymore. Noone has to work to be an American. Nobody has to believe in America. It should be love it or leave it but you can't be here and hate it.

he has some major run on sentences...

if peeps want to come to america they gotta follow the rules simple as that.

do you invite strangers into your house and when they say they like your bedroom, do you get out of your bedroom so they can sleep there? no, you establish rules and they must follow them otherwise they can't stay in your house. after a while soon they will have a say in how the house is run and when new strangers come in you all decide the rules.

I don't know that it is more important than now, the idea is 100 years old. Some immigrants assimilate well, others don't.
