I have a medical bill from 7 years ago, and I've been making consistent payments of $20.00. The problem is my checks have been lost on 4 occasions and I've had to write a check again, but they manage to find the check after cashing the additional check, so that $40 for one month payment. Also, I never receive a statement for balance owe, they call claiming a payment was not received; yet I have a copy of a processed check and I end up faxing to prove the payments. I ask for a run down of payments received, they provide incorrect information about the check numbers, and the months the check number are for, but the amount received is correct. What can I do to solve these harassing acts and inaccuracies, when they are not doing their job properly. Help!!! I wish I could pay more, but I'm on a limited income and I'm unable to settle at this time.

Send them a letter (certified, return receipt requested) stating that unless you receive an accurate, detailed copy of your ENTIRE account history within a certain amount (I'd try 30 days) of time, you will assume that this debt is considered paid in full, and will expect that to be reflected in their report to the credit bureaus. Tell them that you are disputing the validity of this debt, and they only have a certain amount of time (check with the credit bureaus) to respond to you, proving that this is a valid debt. If they don't meet that deadline, you are no longer obligated.
Can you go back through your records and see how much you've paid? Keep your own records, since they're not doing a good job of keeping theirs!!!

Tell them if this does not stop immediately you will contact an attorney...sometimes just the threat of an attorney will "magically" solve the issue. As long as you're paying even $5-$10 a month and they cash your check...then you"re legally correct. They may threaten to turn you in to collections...but if they do, you can prove your case then file a lawsuit for harrassment
