Hi im going to college next year and as ive been working as a teachers assistant in my synagogue ive become interested in trying to learn hebrew. I can read and write the alphabet but i no longer know the meaning of any words and i never got far enough to learn to form sentences etc. The thing im most worried about is the no vowels part, but learning the language as a whole seems pretty intimidating too. any advice?

Zeh Tov Meod (It is very good) that you want to learn Hebrew. I have been studying Hebrew all my life and what I have found is that the more immersed you are in it the better speaker you will become. When you are in college you will have lots of opportunities to immerse yourself in Hebrew. First, join the college's Hillel. They can offer programs such as Hebrew movie night or Hebrew speaking dinners. They also can tell you about trips to Israel, such as birthright, where you can learn Hebrew in Israel. Some programs even offer college credit.

See if the college offers Hebrew courses. Obviously taking some would help your Hebrew. See if there are any Israeli or Hebrew speakers at the college that you can talk to. If you have an Ipod or some kind of portable music player, you can download Hebrew music and dialogue that you can listen to. Even if you can only pick out a few words it will help you learn the flow of the language and build your vocabulary.

As for now, if you feel comfortable take an adult education course at your Temple. Go to Israel for the summer on a teen trip. Read the siddur and bible and use the translation to pick out words you know.

Depending on where you live there could be many other resources that I am not saying. Ask your local rabbi or Hebrew school director for more resources.
