my son has an 87 which he abuses daily with 250,000 + miles on it. something is always breaking though. just put a used x-fer case on it a month ago. always has electrical issues also. lights, ignition, etc. i suspect if he wasnt so rough on it alot of whats needed to be done to it would not have had to have been. he takes it offroad alot. has a lift and all that. be advised also that the entire vehicle was built around the heater core if you ever have to replace it. we just bypassed his. he can just be cold. unless you get this 88 for around 1000 dollars or less, look for something else. cant ignore that it is 20 years old.

Oh man, I met one that had well into 250, 000 miles on it (noooo, I'm not exagerrating) with original parts still intact. Granted, some of said original parts were smothered in oil, but the darn thing ran, and got its owner from point A to point B. Naturally, anything older will have some aches and pains, but regular maintenance should keep it roadworthy (I'm also assuming that this 170,000 miles was put on it kindly; not by a pack of teenagers 4x'ing it out in the swamps). But, anyway, I am all for older vehicles, just because they don't look like jellybeans with tires, and as long as the price is right, you should have a great truck. Living in AK, I see a lot of older models on the road still. If those Cherokees can survive -50 below winters and keep kickin' that's got to be saying something!

oh man that things gonna last you forever. if its got the 4.0 then man those things are bomb proof. my bros got the same jeep with about the same millage and its going strong plenty of power and very healthy. my suggestion is to go through the engine give it a once over before you do any major driving with it. do a tune up spark plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, all that stuff and it will be as good as new. if anything later in the future if you start to feel a lack in power like it used to (and you know how to work on cars) do a engine gasket set with some new pistons and your good for another 100k or so.

I would have the oil pressure checked and also the compression checked, those are two good indications of a engines condition. At any rate don't pay to much as its got lots of miles,it could last a month and it might last years.

Drive it see how it feels. I have a 93 grand cherokee with 351,000 miles and still running great (knock on wood). A good owner can put on miles without destroying it.

It all depends on the type of maintenance it has had. It's past the average at best, definitely have it properly inspected by a tech or you could be buying someone else's headache.
