"Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain."
What this means is saying his name without a reason religously. If you aren't praying Preaching or giving reverence to him, then you are saying his name without a reason, or in vain. The exlaim "Oh My God!" is usualy used when excited, and could be said concerning many situations other than religous, so most of the time, yes, it is breaking a commandment.

Im not religious, but Id say not .... I think its more of an exclamation of disbelief...
For example, you see a three headed kitten running around, you say "Oh my God"....
Its like your exclaiming that you are either in shock or disbelief, or, even if subconsciously doing so, asking God, (even though he is not there) for an answer about what is going on as it is something that you do not understand or believe.
Its a reaction... we see or hear something we never seen or heard of before and we are think it wrong cause we dont know nothing about it, its like people say it so they can seek an answer of some kind...
I do not beleive it is against one of the commandments, but Im not religious.... Some would say it is but rememer also that God wouldnt want to punish you for saying something like Oh my God if he knew you totally thought it was perfectly ok.
Even Im confusing myself now... ITS OK.... I KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!! :)
HOW OLD ARE YOU???.... if your young dont listen to these people... your not going to be punished in any way if you've said it before... If it bothers you that much just dont say it! God of all people should know that every one makes mistakes, dont sweat it kido, go out and have some fun instead of procrastinating over little things....

Using the Lord's Name in vain is one of the commandments. When you just say it as a matter of fact it is wrong, I feel. But when you really need Him and you need Him to take action right away, I don't feel it is. May God Bless U.

Taking the Lord's name in vain has a much deeper meaning than simply cursing, or using frivolous language. To take God's name in vain means to misrepresent Him to the people. This is a serious matter. To commit atrocities in His name, or to make selfishly motivated decisions but making it appear as God's will are a few examples of what it talks about.

Yeah. It falls under the name in vain commandment. It was intended to keep people from falsely praying, but then it became a replacement for a swear word or just utter astonishment. So, as you see, it is a technicality. As long as you are sincere in your faith and prayers, you'll be okay.
Try "Ohmigawd". Not the same thing, but similiar enough to slip into if you catch yourself.

Yes. It is using the name of God in a casual flippant way. It is a sign of what is not in a person's heart who uses this phrase regularly. It seems trivial today when all of television is filled with much worse, nevertheless it is still breaking one of God's laws.

We don't live under the law anymore, this is the age of grace. God knows we can't keep from breaking the commandments, that's why he sent Christ to clean us up. Now we are seen by God, through the Blood of Christ. (But we still need to bridle our tongue)

Is this expression a plea for help? Or is it a vain curse? The heart of the individuals knows their intentions. God does as well.

Yes it is. It's considered taking the name of the Lord in vain. I have a very bad habit of doing that.
